💡 How Indian Salary & Take-Home Pay is Structured

  • ✓Gross Salary = Basic Pay + HRA + Special Allowance + Conveyance + Performance Bonus + Other Allowances.
  • ✓Employee Deductions = Employee EPF (12%) + Professional Tax (₹200) + ESIC (0.75% if eligible) + Monthly TDS (Income Tax) + Voluntary Deductions.
  • ✓Net Take-Home Pay = Gross Salary − Total Employee Deductions.
  • ✓Cost to Company (CTC) = Gross Salary + Employer EPF (12%) + Gratuity Accrual (4.81%) + Corporate Insurance + Company Perks.
  • ✓TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is calculated annually by employers based on your declared regime (New vs Old) and divided across remaining months.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CTC, Gross Salary, and Net In-Hand Salary?

Cost to Company (CTC) is the total annual cost an employer incurs to hire you, including employer EPF contributions, gratuity accrual, and group insurance premiums. Gross Salary is the total earnings before any deductions. Net In-Hand (Take-Home) Salary is the actual cash credited to your bank account each month after subtracting employee EPF, Professional Tax, ESIC, and Income Tax (TDS).

Why is Employee EPF deducted as ₹1,800 instead of 12% of my actual basic salary?

Under EPFO regulations, the statutory wage ceiling for mandatory provident fund enrollment is ₹15,000 per month. Many private employers cap both employee and employer EPF contributions to 12% of ₹15,000 (which equals ₹1,800 per month). However, employers may also choose or allow employees to contribute 12% of their actual basic salary, which increases retirement savings but reduces monthly take-home pay.

How does Professional Tax (PT) work across different Indian states?

Professional Tax is levied by state governments on salaried individuals, subject to a constitutional maximum ceiling of ₹2,500 per year. Most states (including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal) charge a flat ₹200 per month (with Maharashtra deducting ₹300 in February). Tamil Nadu charges approximately ₹208 per month. Union Territories and states like Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan do not levy Professional Tax.

Why does this tool ask me to enter my Monthly TDS rather than calculating tax automatically?

Under Indian statutory tax rules, computing accurate TDS requires complete knowledge of an employee's selected tax regime (New Section 115BAC vs Old Regime), housing rent receipts for HRA exemption under Section 10(13A), home loan interest under Section 24(b), and Chapter VI-A investment proofs (80C, 80D, 80CCD). Generating an automated tax figure without this full context would risk providing inaccurate payroll expectations. Entering your actual payroll TDS ensures 100% precision for your specific situation.
