Cost per Kilometre Calculator

Enter what a vehicle costs you each month and per kilometre to see its cost per km, its cost per month, and which costs take the biggest share. The figures pre-filled are examples. Your entered values stay out of analytics.

Formula and assumptions

Each fixed cost per km = monthly amount ÷ kilometres per month. Fuel per km = fuel price ÷ mileage. Tyre, maintenance and toll costs are used as entered. Cost per km = the sum of all of them. Cost per month = cost per km × kilometres per month. Each share = that cost ÷ the total.

  • Fixed costs are entered per month and spread over the kilometres run in a month. Running costs are entered per kilometre.
  • Fuel cost per km is the fuel price per litre divided by the mileage in km per litre. The price is what you pay, taxes included.
  • Every optional cost left blank counts as zero. The figures are the amounts you enter; the tool knows no market rates, and any pre-filled figures are examples.
  • Cost per km goes up when the vehicle runs fewer kilometres, because the fixed costs are shared over fewer.
  • It does not include depreciation, loading, parking, GPS, GST or the price to charge a customer.
  • Money is rounded to 2 decimal places (half up), each from the exact figure, so rounded lines can differ from the rounded total by a paisa. Shares are rounded to 1 decimal place and may not add to exactly 100%.

Frequently asked questions

Why does cost per km change when I change the kilometres?

Fixed costs are paid whatever the distance, so they are shared over fewer kilometres when the vehicle runs less. Running costs per km stay the same.

Can I leave a cost blank?

Yes. A blank fixed or running cost counts as zero. Kilometres per month, fuel price and mileage are needed.

Are the pre-filled numbers real rates?

No. They are examples so you can see how the tool works. Replace every figure with your own.

Why might the lines not add up exactly?

Each figure is rounded to the paisa from its exact value, so rounded lines can differ from the total by a paisa, and the shares may not add to exactly 100%.

What does this not include?

Depreciation, loading and unloading, parking, GPS, GST, and the price to charge a customer. It shows what the vehicle costs you, not what to charge.
