GST rates were rationalised with effect from 22 September 2025, with 5% and 18% as the principal rates and a special 40% rate for specified supplies. Nil rates, exemptions and other applicable rates continue according to relevant notifications. Certain goods, including specified tobacco and pan masala products, followed a separate transition timetable. Always verify the applicable rate for the relevant goods or services and transaction date.

GST rate

These buttons are common presets, not a complete list of rates. The rate that applies depends on the goods or services, the relevant notifications and the date of the supply.

0% is for the calculation only. Exempt, nil-rated and zero-rated supplies are not the same thing. The supply's classification must be determined separately.

40% is a special rate for specified goods or services, not a general higher rate.

Earlier GST rates (12% / 28%) – verify applicability

Whether an earlier rate applies depends on the relevant notification, the circumstances of the supply and the statutory time-of-supply provisions. Do not assume an earlier rate applies only because the invoice is older.

Formula and assumptions

Taxable value = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). GST = total − taxable value.

  • The total you enter already includes GST at the single rate you choose.
  • CGST and SGST are shown as an equal split for intra-state supply; inter-state supply shows IGST.
  • Amounts are rounded to 2 decimal places (half up); the taxable value is rounded first and GST is the remainder, so the two always add back to your total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove GST from a price?

Enter the total that includes GST and the GST rate. The calculator divides by one plus the rate to find the price before tax.

Why is this not just the rate subtracted?

GST is charged on the price before tax, not on the total. Taking 18% off ₹1,180 gives ₹967.60, not the correct ₹1,000.

Which rate should I choose?

Use the GST rate that applies to your goods or services. If you are unsure, check with a qualified professional; this tool does not decide the rate.

What changed in GST rates from 22 September 2025?

GST rates were rationalised with effect from 22 September 2025, with 5% and 18% as the principal rates and a special 40% rate for specified supplies. Nil rates, exemptions and other applicable rates continue according to relevant notifications. Certain goods, including specified tobacco and pan masala products, followed a separate transition timetable. Always verify the applicable rate for the relevant goods or services and transaction date. The tax treatment of specified tobacco and pan masala products changed from 1 February 2026. Compensation cess is not assumed to continue on those products after its withdrawal. The cess position is determined separately. The withdrawal of GST compensation cess does not mean that no other applicable cess or levy may arise. Any separate levy must be checked under its own legal provisions.
