Frequently asked questions

Does a valid format mean the GSTIN is registered?

No. A well-formed number can still be unregistered, cancelled or belong to someone else. This tool checks format only. Confirm registration on the GST portal.

Why does it say 'Format appears valid' rather than 'valid'?

Because format is all it can check. Wording that suggested an active registration would be misleading.

Is the number I enter stored or sent anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser and the number is not saved or included in analytics.

Why do some GSTINs start with 25, 28, 97 or 99?

25 and 28 were the state codes for Daman and Diu and Andhra Pradesh before 2020, 97 is Other Territory and 99 is Centre Jurisdiction. They are accepted as state codes.
