Product Cost Builder

Add materials, labour, packaging and other costs one by one, then enter the units they cover, to see the true cost per unit — for manufacturing a product from parts or costing a bulk purchase before you retail it. Your entered values stay out of analytics.

Add every cost that goes into this product or bulk lot, then enter how many units it covers. Nothing you enter leaves your device.

Formula and assumptions

Each line's amount is quantity times rate. A category's subtotal is the sum of its lines; the total cost is the sum of every category. Cost per unit = total cost ÷ units produced or purchased.

  • Each line's amount is quantity times rate. A category's subtotal is the sum of its lines; the total cost is the sum of every category. A category with no lines is left out of the breakdown.
  • Cost per unit divides the total cost by the units produced or purchased you enter — whichever this cost covers.
  • Every pre-filled figure is an example, not a market rate.
  • Each line's amount is rounded to 2 decimal places (half up). Category subtotals and the total cost are the sum of those rounded amounts, so they add up exactly to the lines shown. Cost per unit is the total cost divided by the units, rounded to 2 decimal places (half up).

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this for a bulk purchase I'm going to retail, not something I manufacture?

Yes — enter the purchase cost as a materials line, freight and any other charges as their own lines, and the quantity you bought as units purchased.

Does this suggest a selling price?

No. It stops at cost per unit. Use the "Use this cost in" links to carry that figure into the Selling Price, Markup or Profit Margin Calculator.

How is this different from the Landed Cost Calculator?

Landed Cost Calculator adds a fixed set of import-style costs (freight, insurance, duties) to one purchase value. This tool lets you add any number of your own line items, grouped by category, which suits a multi-part product or a detailed cost sheet better.
