Formula and assumptions

Units = (fixed costs + target profit) ÷ (selling price − variable cost per unit).

  • Price and variable cost per unit stay the same however many you sell.
  • Fixed costs stay the same for the period you are planning.
  • Tax on profit is not included; enter a profit target before tax.
  • Units are rounded up to whole units so the target is met; revenue is the price times those whole units, to 2 decimal places.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from break-even?

Break-even finds the units that give zero profit. This adds your profit target to the costs you need to cover.

What is contribution per unit?

The selling price minus the variable cost: what each unit contributes towards fixed costs and profit.

Is the target before or after tax?

Before tax. Tax is not included, so set a profit target that allows for it.
