Frequently asked questions
What is the 5th of the month rule for PPF interest?
Under Para 5(2) of the Public Provident Fund Scheme 2019, interest is calculated on the lowest balance in your account between the close of the 5th day and the end of the month. If you deposit on or before the 5th, your deposit earns interest for that entire month. If deposited on or after the 6th, that deposit earns zero interest for that month and only begins earning interest from the 1st of the following month.
What is the best date to deposit lump sum money in PPF?
The most optimal time to make an annual lump sum deposit is between April 1st and April 5th. Depositing on or before April 5th ensures your full annual investment earns compound interest for all 12 months of the financial year, maximizing compounding returns.
Can PPF be extended beyond 15 years?
Yes. PPF accounts can be extended indefinitely in blocks of 5 years. You can choose either: 1) Extension with contributions (continue depositing up to ₹1.5 Lakh/year and earning interest), or 2) Extension without contributions (no fresh deposits needed; accumulated corpus continues earning 7.1% interest, with the freedom to make one partial withdrawal per year).
When can I take a loan against my PPF account?
Loans against PPF are permitted between the 3rd and 6th financial years from account opening. The maximum loan amount is capped at 25% of the balance standing at credit at the end of the second financial year immediately preceding the year of loan application. The interest rate is 1% above the prevailing PPF rate if repaid within 36 months.
When and how much can I partially withdraw from PPF?
Partial withdrawals are permitted once every financial year from the 7th financial year onwards. You can withdraw up to 50% of the balance at credit at the end of the 4th preceding financial year, or the preceding financial year, whichever is lower.
What is the tax status of PPF returns?
PPF falls under the pure EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) category. Annual deposits up to ₹1,50,000 qualify for deduction under Section 80C, annual accrued interest is completely tax-free under Section 10(11), and the entire maturity payout upon withdrawal is 100% exempt from income tax.
