Frequently asked questions
What is the current EPFO interest rate for EPF?
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has notified an annual interest rate of 8.25% p.a. for FY 2023-24 and FY 2024-25. Interest is calculated on the running monthly balance of the account and credited at the end of each financial year (March 31st).
How is the employer's 12% EPF contribution split with EPS?
The employer's total 12% contribution is split into two components: 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) subject to a statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000 per month (maximum ₹1,250/month). The remaining 3.67% (plus any excess 8.33% contribution when basic salary exceeds ₹15,000) is deposited into the employee's EPF account. When an employee reaches age 58, EPS contribution ceases and the entire 12% employer share goes to EPF.
When is EPF withdrawal exempt from Income Tax?
Under Section 10(11) and 10(12) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, withdrawal of accumulated EPF balance is 100% tax-free if the employee has completed 5 or more years of continuous service. If withdrawn before 5 continuous years, the entire sum (employee contribution, employer contribution, and accrued interest) becomes taxable, and TDS under Section 192A is deducted at 10% (with PAN) or maximum marginal rate (without PAN).
What is the ₹2.5 Lakh annual tax threshold under CBDT Rule 9D?
Introduced by the Finance Act 2021, if an employee's aggregate EPF and VPF contributions exceed ₹2,50,000 in a financial year (or ₹5,00,000 where there is no employer contribution), the interest earned on the contribution exceeding ₹2,50,000 is taxable as 'Income from Other Sources' at normal slab rates.
What are the eligibility rules for monthly EPS pension?
To qualify for a monthly pension under EPS 1995, an employee must complete at least 10 years of eligible pensionable service. Superannuation pension commences at age 58. Members can opt for early reduced pension starting from age 50 (reduced by 4% for each year below 58). Members who complete 20 or more years of service and retire at 58 receive a 2-year service bonus in their pension formula.
What happens to EPS if total service is under 10 years?
If an employee exits employment or retires with less than 10 years of total service, they are not eligible for a monthly pension. Instead, they can either claim a Scheme Certificate (to carry forward service tenure to a future employer) or withdraw a lump-sum refund under Table D of the EPS 1995 scheme based on their wages and completed years of service.
